Nelson Bay Accommodation with Boat Parking
Port Stephens estuary and surrounding waters are a haven for fisherman (and women). Port Stephens offers estaurine fishing within the Harbour and game fishing offshore.
Port Stephens Harbour is 2.5 times larger than Sydney Harbour and makes up a sizeable part of the Port Stephens Great Lakes Marine Park (which doesn't mean it is closed for fishing). Estuary fishing around the port includes wharves, beaches and break walls, as well as countless local spots that can be accessed by boat (Middle Island, the Short Cut, Corrie Island, Tilligerry Creek). There are plenty of boat ramps around Port Stephens to launch your boat, Soldiers Point, Shoal Bay, Little Beach to name a few. Fish for flathead, bream, whiting and jewfish or try for blue swimmer crabs (during the months that have an 'r' in them we are told?).
The waters offshore are alive with marine life. We don't just have dolphins and whales that frequent our waters, there are also snapper, blue, black and striped marlin, yellow fin tuna, mahi mahi, sword fish and various species of shark. Bring your boat and see what you can find (remember to check sea conditions prior).
Remember to check the Port Stephens Great Lakes Marine Park map before you start fishing to ensure you are in a zone where fishing is allowed. Click here for a copy of the map.
