Free things to do in Port Stephens

Nelson Bay Free Things to Do

Port Stephens is perfect for a shortbreak or holiday. It is just 2.5 hours North of Sydney, 1 hour North of Newcastle, 1.5 hours from the Hunter Valley and a short flight from Melbourne, Brisbane or the Gold Coast (Newcastle Airport is actually in Port Stephens and only 30 minutes from Nelson Bay).

Port Stephens is full of things to do that are absolutely free (or with just a small charge). Where do we begin? Let's start with the beaches... there are 26 golden sandy beaches in Port Stephens, including oceanside surf beaches and calm water harbour beaches (where you can swim, surf, bodyboard), lots of coastline for land based whale watching between June and November, the Stockton Sand Dunes with dunes rising up to 40 metres high, plenty of rocks and jetties for fishing, kilometres of cycleways for bike riding, walking trails through Tomaree National Park (click here to find out more) and parks with playgrounds, BBQ's and picnic areas.

Also think about visiting attractions such as the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre for local arts and crafts, Tilligerry Habitat Reserve for self guided koala walks and the Inner Lighthouse Cottage and Coastal Patrol Base.

And, head to d'Albora Marina on the weekends and during the school holidays where there is usually live outdoor entertainment or call in at the Port Stephens Visitors Centre (Victoria Parade, Nelson Bay), to find out where to local markets are on (they are on every weekend at different venues).
