Port Stephens is on the East coast of New South Wales, Australia and is approximately 220 kilometres North of Sydney (2.5 to 3 hours drive). Port Stephens is the name of the harbour (which is 2.5 times the size of Sydney Harbour and home to approximately 120 Bottlenose dolphins year round), so there is not actually a town called Port Stephens and no directional signs that will say Port Stephens (signs will generally say Nelson Bay). Port Stephens is made up of a number of towns on the Tomaree and Tilligerry Peninsulas. Nelson Bay is the main tourism centre on the Tomaree Peninsula and has a marina, boutique shopping, cafes and restaurants, supermarket, petrol station, banks and a huge range of accommodation options. Also within ten minutes drive from Nelson Bay there is Shoal Bay, Fingal Bay, Salamander Bay, Soldiers Point, Corlette, Anna Bay and Boat Harbour. You will find accommodation options at each of these towns, along with shops and amenities close by (the main shopping centre with two supermarkets and over 80 specialty shops is at Salamander Bay). If beaches are your focus, Port Stephens has 26 of them. For sheltered water swimming, snorkelling, diving and fishing then try Nelson Bay or Shoal Bay (or Little Beach or Dutchies Beach) or for suf beaches for surfing, bodyboarding and beach fishing then look towards Fingal Bay or Anna Bay.
